Tiger Cave Temple Sunset Tour
By John Zx, Independent travel researcher · Prices checked 2026-07-09, confirmed live at checkout
A focused afternoon trip built around one thing: climbing the 1,237-step staircase and watching sunset from the golden Buddha platform, 278 meters above Krabi. Guide, transfers, fruit, flashlight and insurance included.

What makes sunset the right call?
By late afternoon the staircase falls into shade and the stone loses its stored heat, which makes the climb far more humane than at noon. At the summit the payoff is theatrical: the sun drops behind the Phanom Bencha range, the limestone karsts go purple, and the giant golden Buddha catches the last warm light. Stay a few extra minutes and the lights of Krabi Town start to twinkle in the dusk.
What should you expect?
Afternoon hotel pickup, then straight to Wat Tham Suea. The climb is the tour: 1,237 steps by the sign at the base, closer to 1,260 by most recent counts, and very steep in sections. Take it slow, use the handrails, and let the resident macaques have right of way on the lower flights. After dark falls the guide leads the descent by flashlight and the van returns you to your hotel.
Who should book it?
Travelers in reasonable shape who want the temple experience at its most beautiful, and photographers chasing golden hour. It is not for anyone with knee trouble, and small children will struggle with the step height. If your fitness is in doubt, the cave shrines at the base are still worth the trip, but this tour exists for the summit.
Prices and what is included
Round trip transfers, a guide, fresh fruit, drinking water, a flashlight and insurance are included. The 50 baht foreigner fee at the staircase is charged separately, 25 for children. Prices vary by pickup zone and season; the live calendar confirms the rate for your date.
Insider tips
Carry at least a liter of water per person; the summit stall is not always open in the evening. Long light pants beat shorts twice over here: temple dress rules and mosquito hour. Set your camera before the final flight of stairs, because the light moves fast once the sun touches the ridge.
When is sunset, and how long do you get up top?
Krabi sunsets run from about 6:10pm in December to about 6:45pm in July. The tour times the climb so you summit with a comfortable margin before the show, usually 45 minutes to an hour on the platform. That is enough for the golden Buddha in warm light, the 360 degree panorama, and the moment the karst shadows stretch across the valley. The descent starts in fading light with flashlights provided, and the lower flights are lit enough to feel safe. Dry season gives the reliable colors; rainy season gives the occasional spectacular one.
How fit do you need to be?
Treat the staircase as a workout: 1,237 steps by the sign, about 1,260 by recent counts, with riser heights that reach mid-thigh in a few punishing stretches around the 700 mark. Most reasonably active people take 40 to 60 minutes up with breaks at the numbered landings. There is no shame in the slow lane; water stops and shaded rests appear regularly, and the guide paces the group to its slowest climber. Knee braces and walking poles are legitimate equipment here, and the handrails matter more coming down.
How it compares
The sunset tour with lunch costs less and adds the Khlong Thom spring water stops, but you trade summit time for pool time. The sunrise jungle tour is this tour's mirror image at dawn with swims added. The longtail boat sunset combo watches the same sky from sea level instead.
