Things to do in Krabi Town (the base most people skip)
By John Zx, Independent travel researcher · Updated 2026-07-09

Most visitors treat Krabi Town as an airport with a night market attached and sleep in Ao Nang instead. Their loss. The provincial capital is a real working river town with limestone theater on its doorstep, southern Thailand's best cheap food, and the Tiger Cave Temple ten minutes up the road. Here is how to spend a proper day, plus where to eat and sleep, with distances that actually mean something.
What should you actually do in Krabi Town?
- Climb the Tiger Cave Temple early. Eight kilometers out, 15 minutes by Grab, and the reason this site exists. Beat the heat, then reward yourself in town. The steps guide has the full brief.
- Walk the riverfront to the Black Crab Monument. Longtails, mudskippers at low tide, and the twin Khao Khanab Nam peaks across the water. Best light is the last hour before sunset.
- Boat to Khao Khanab Nam. Fifteen minutes by longtail from the pier to caves with stalactites and ancient traces inside the twin peaks. Combine with a mangrove loop.
- Visit Wat Kaew Korawaram. The white temple on the staircase hill in the middle of town: quiet, ornate and free.
- Eat your way through the night market. The riverside night market runs nightly; the bigger weekend walking street adds music and local families by the hundred.
- Cross to Koh Klang. The car-free island community opposite town: rice fields, batik and fishing boats, five minutes by boat and a world away.
A one day plan that works
| 6:30am | Grab to Wat Tham Suea, climb before the heat, cave shrines after |
|---|---|
| 10:30am | Late breakfast in town; coffee on Maharat Road |
| 1pm | Longtail to Khao Khanab Nam caves and the mangroves, or the Koh Klang crossing |
| 5pm | Riverfront walk to the Black Crab Monument for golden hour |
| 6:30pm | Night market dinner: grilled seafood, roti, fruit shakes |
Where to eat: before and after the temple

Frequently asked questions
Is Krabi Town worth staying in?
Yes, if you prefer real-town energy, river views and street food over beach resorts. It is cheaper than Ao Nang, closer to the Tiger Cave Temple, and better connected for buses and the airport. Beach days become a 30 minute songthaew ride.
What is Krabi Town known for?
The riverfront with the twin Khao Khanab Nam peaks, the weekend walking street and night markets, the white Wat Kaew Korawaram temple on the hill, mangrove boat trips, and being the launch point for the Tiger Cave Temple 8 kilometers away.
How many days do you need?
One full day covers the town itself: morning temple climb, riverfront and mangroves in the afternoon, night market for dinner. Add days for the Emerald Pool loop, islands, and Koh Klang, and the town works well as a three night base.
Is Krabi Town walkable?
The center is compact and flat: riverfront, markets, cafes and Wat Kaew are all within a 15 minute walk of each other. The Tiger Cave Temple and Wat Bang Thong are drives, and songthaews or Grab cover everything the feet cannot.
What is the black crab statue?
The Black Crab Monument on the riverfront honors the crabs that keep the mangrove ecosystem alive. It is Krabi Town's favorite photo stop, especially at dusk with the twin peaks behind, and it anchors the promenade walk.
