Scooter rental in Krabi: prices, rules and the temple ride
By John Zx, Independent travel researcher · Updated 2026-07-09

A scooter is the cheapest freedom in Krabi: 250 baht a day turns the Tiger Cave Temple, the beaches and the viewpoints into a choose-your-own-adventure. It is also the item most likely to dent a holiday when the paperwork or the road sense is missing. Here is the honest, current picture.
What does rental actually cost?
| Bike | Per day | Per week | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 125cc automatic, older | 200-250 baht | 1,200-1,500 | The workhorse; fine for the temple loop |
| 125-160cc, newer | 250-350 baht | 1,500-2,100 | Better brakes, worth it two-up |
| Hotel delivery / insurance add-ons | +50-100 baht | varies | Read what the insurance actually covers |
Prices checked July 2026 across Krabi Town and Ao Nang shops; high season adds 10 to 20 percent.
The licence rule nobody wants to hear
Thailand requires a motorcycle licence, and for visitors that means your home motorcycle licence plus an International Driving Permit with the motorcycle category stamped. A car licence does not cover a 125cc scooter. Shops rarely check; police checkpoints on the Ao Nang road do, and the roadside fine is around 500 baht. The bigger risk is invisible: after an accident, travel insurers routinely refuse claims from unlicensed riders, and hospital bills are the expensive way to learn it. If you cannot ride legally, a Grab, taxi or tour costs less than the deductible.
How is the ride to the temple?
From Krabi Town: genuinely easy. Twenty minutes, one stretch of Highway 4, a signed left turn, free shaded parking at the courtyard. Riding out for a sunrise climb is the single best argument for renting, since nothing else moves that early. From Ao Nang: 45 minutes including town traffic, fine in daylight, unpleasant after dark. The Khlong Thom run to the Emerald Pool and Hot Springs adds an hour each way of straight highway; doable, but it turns the day into 150 kilometers of riding.
Renting without getting burned
- Video the bike before leaving: every panel, the mirrors, the fuel level
- Cash deposit or passport copy, never the passport itself
- Test both brakes and the horn in the first hundred meters
- Helmets for both riders, chin strap actually clipped
- Park at the temple in the marked area; monkeys sit on seats and eat mirrors' rubber, which is a real thing you now know
So: rent, or just book the tour?
Run your numbers in the estimator. The pattern: confident solo riders with an IDP save real money and gain sunrise access; couples break roughly even against a bundled tour once gates, fuel and deposit hassle are counted; anyone without the licence should not be doing this math at all. There is no shame in the van.
Frequently asked questions
How much does scooter rental cost in Krabi?
Typical 2026 prices: 200 to 300 baht per day for a 125cc automatic in Krabi Town or Ao Nang, less by the week. Newer bikes and delivery to your hotel cost more. Fuel is about 50 baht per liter and the temple loop uses very little.
Do I need a licence to rent a scooter?
Legally yes: a motorcycle licence from home plus an International Driving Permit with the motorcycle category. Many shops rent without checking, but police checkpoints fine riders around 500 baht without the IDP, and your travel insurance can refuse a claim entirely.
Is riding to the Tiger Cave Temple safe?
The ride from Krabi Town is short and simple: one highway stretch, a signed turnoff, free parking. From Ao Nang add 45 minutes of real traffic. The usual Thailand rules apply: helmet always, assume nobody sees you, and never ride at night in the rain.
Should I leave my passport as a deposit?
Avoid it. Reputable shops accept a cash deposit of 1,000 to 3,000 baht or a photocopy instead. A shop holding your passport controls every damage negotiation. Photograph the bike from every angle before riding off, existing scratches included.
Scooter or tour for the jungle loop?
Solo riders save roughly half by going DIY even after fees and fuel. For two people the gap shrinks to a few hundred baht against a bundled tour, and the tour adds a guide and zero driving. Our estimator on the homepage runs your exact numbers.
